Love Will Keep Us Together (1975) 5/17/20

In 1972, Daryl Dragon was an auxiliary keyboard player in the Beach Boys' touring band. Toni Tennille was in San Francisco, co-writing a rock musical called “Mother Earth.”

When Toni 's show was getting ready to move to L.A., she put out a call for an L.A. based keyboardist. Daryl was between tours, applied, and not only got the job...he got the girl!

Later on, the Beach Boys came calling again, and they BOTH were added to the touring group for about a year.

Eventually, they realized they could make “beautiful music together,” so they called themselves “The Captain & Tennille” and in 1975, they released their first album. The first single from that album was destined to become a “Great Song of the '70s” and their biggest hit.

In short order, “Love Will Keep Us Together” was a Top 10 smash in 6 countries, reaching #1 in the US, Canada and Australia. It was 1975's best-selling song in the US, and it won the Grammy Award for “Record of the Year!

The song was written by Neil Sedaka and Howard Greenfield. As a thank you –and a salute--to Neil, they sang “Sedaka's back” near the end of the song.

TRIVIA: Daryl got his nickname from Beach Boy Mike Love, who, noting Daryl's fondness for wearing Captain's hats during Beach Boy concerts, would introduce him as “Captain Keyboard.”

"Love Will Keep Us Together:” a “Great Song of the '70s!”
