Today's "Great Song of the '70s" was the last big hit for the group "Sweet," and overall, it was quite a bit different than their other glam rock hits like "Little Willy," which we highlighted back on 6/5/20. "Love is Like Oxygen" featured high vocal harmonies, a string section and some disco elements, and the combination was "Sweet" enough to propel the song into the Top 10 in 11 countries, peaking at #6 in Switzerland and New Zealand...and #8 in Belgium, Ireland, Canada and the US.
It was nominated for 1978's "Song of the Year" at Britain's Ivor Novello Awards (for songwriters and composers), but lost to Gerry Rafferty's "Baker Street." But hey, if a "Great Song" like "Love is Like Oxygen" is going to lose a contest--it might was well be to ANOTHER "Great Song." right?!
