In 1971, Doors guitarist Robbie Krieger wrote a “Great Song of the '70s” for the album “L.A. Woman,” but there was a problem.
Their producer, Paul Rothschild, (who had worked with the Doors before, as well as Janis Joplin and The Paul Butterfield Blues Band) thought “Love Her Madly” was horrible and said so. He called it “cocktail music,” and when the group insisted upon including it on the album, he flat out quit the project!
(Note: He also had a problem with “Riders on the Storm,” which we highlighted back on July 15th.) https://cuuuk8.wixsite.com/mysite/post/riders-on-the-storm-1971-7-15-20
Well, to paraphrase an old saying:,“The album must go on! The Doors decided to self produce ”L.A. Woman,” and release “Love Her Madly” as the first single.
Good move! It became one of the Doors' biggest hits, reaching #11 on Billboard's Hot 100, and #3 on Canada's Top 40. It was also a Top 10 hit in Australia and The Netherlands.
I guess it proves even great producers can make a mistake one in a while. The cocktails are on us, Mr. Rothschild.
