The group Styx came out of Chicago in 1972, and quickly built a name for themselves. In 1973, they released their first "Great Song:" "Lady," which we highlighted way back on 1/15/20.
It took a while--and a record label change from Wooden Nickel to A&M-- before they scored again with a "Great Song of 1976' about a rather aggressive lover who desperately wants to live together with his girlfriend, "Lorelei."
You can't really blame him, though. After all, in German mythology, Lorelei is a siren whose spirit inhabits a large rock in the Rhine River, As sailors pass by, she lures them into the rock, where they meet their doom.
By the end of the song, we're not quite sure if the singer (Dennis DeYoung) dodges the bullet, or rock, as it were.
On the charts, "Lorelei" reached #6 in Canada... and #27 in the US overall...but much higher in the Midwest, where powerful radio stations like WLS in Chicago played it into their own Top 10 lists.
