Today's featured artist, Leo Sayer, burst onto the scene in 1973, scoring several hits in a row---but only in The United Kingdom and other countries around the world.
He only sporadically appeared on the US charts, possibly because we didn't quite know what to make of a singer who would sometimes perform in costume and clown/mime make-up. Plus, many of his songs were "GREAT, but a bit quirky.
Case in point: today's "Great Song of 1975."
"Long Tall Glasses (I Can Dance)" was Leo's first US hit, and in this case, "quirky" meant "Top 10 record," coming in at #9 on Billboard's Hot 100. Elsewhere, it reached #2 in New Zealand, #3 in Belgium, and #4 in the UK and Ireland.
The web site, songfacts.com, described it as follows: "'Long Tall Glasses (I Can Dance)' is certainly the most famous song about a hungry hobo who has to dance for his dinner."
And that description alone makes it a "Great Song of 1975!" (Plus the song is pretty catchy.)
