Lonely Night (Angel Face) - Captain & Tennille (1976) 5/31/22

In 1975, The husband and wife team of Daryl Dragon and Toni Tennille came out of the Beach Boys' touring band, and as The Captain and Tennille, took Neil Sedaka's "Love Will Keep Us Together" (from their debut album) to #1, starting their run of "Great Songs of the '70s," while simultaneously resurrecting Neil's career. We highlighted the song back on 5/17/20 , and you can read about it below.

In 1976, when Daryl and Toni released "Lonely Night (Angel Face)," from their second album, "Song of Joy," they once again hit the top of the charts with a Sedaka song, and this time, they gave Neil his biggest-selling hit written without a collaborator. (He usually had either Howard Greenfield or Phil Cody write his lyrics).

"Lonely Night (Angel Face)" hit #1 on Billboard's Adult Contemporary Chart, and #3 on the Hot 100. In Canada, it reached #1 on both matching charts. It was also a Top 10 hit in Australia (#9) and New Zealand (#10).

Fun Fact: Daryl was known for wearing captain's hats while playing with the Beach Boys...and when introducing the band members, Mike Love started calling him "Captain Keyboard." The nickname stuck.

So in 1976, Sedaka was definitely back...and so were The Captain & Tennille with "Lonely Night (Angel Face):" a "Great Song of the '70s!"
