Singer/songwriter Ed Townsend wrote today's "Great Song of 1973." Sort of.
Ed's song was somewhat autobiographical and religious in nature---about a man looking to the future after beating alcoholism.
After some lyrical rewrites, Marvin Gaye was set to record it as a love song...but when he got to the studio, he met 17-year-old Janis Hunter, it turned into something a little more-
let's say, "provocative."
"Let's Get It On" cemented Marvin's growing reputation as the king of "baby-making" music. (Seriously!) And just in case you're wondering how that somewhat questionable romance turned out...Marvin and Janis were married shortly thereafter.
The song became a solid #1 on Billboard's Hot 100 and Soul Charts...and in the recent revamp of Rolling Stone's "Top 500 of All Time," it ranks at #264.
Sensual...and Sensational: "Let's Get it On" by Marvin Gaye: A "Great Song of '73!"
