Around 1982 or so, ZZ Top was traveling through Texas during a pouring rain, when they saw a woman on the side of the road getting drenched. They decided to be charitable and give her a ride, but by the time they could turn the bus around to double back, she had disappeared.
In the words of singer/guitarist Billy Gibbons: "She had legs and she knew how to use them."
And that led to today's Great song of 1984!"
Actually, "Legs" appeared on their classic1983 album, "Eliminator," but it wasn't released as a single until 18 months later.
The wait was worth it: It became ZZ Top's biggest hit, reaching #8 on Billboard's Hot 100, and surprisingly, #13 on the Dance Club Chart!
Well, maybe not TOO surprising, since the song featured a cross between their always-stellar guitar work, along with some new wave style synthesizers and a drum machine keeping the beat.
"Legs" won the 1984 MTV Video Music Award for Best Group Video, and over the years, it's been covered by the likes of Nickelback and Kid Rock, among others...so I guess you could say that "Legs" really has some "legs." Sorry for the pun. (Not sorry.)
