Ladies Night (1979) 5/11/20

Throughout the '70s and well into the '80s, bars--and especially discos--would designate one night of the week as “Ladies Night.”

At the clubs where I worked, that night was Wednesday. There was no cover charge for the ladies, 2-for-1 drink specials and other perks designed to get females in the door (and hopefully lots of guys to follow them in!)

It was pretty much a successful promotion everywhere, so it was only a matter of time before a smart band or musical group would come up with a song that would fit the occasion. And that brings us to Kool & the Gang with today's “Great Song of the '70s.”

For 3 weeks right before the end of the decade, (November, 1979), “Ladies Night” hit #1 on Billboard's R&B Chart, while peaking at #5 on the Disco chart. Crossing over into 1980, it reached #8 on the Hot 100.

The song was a funky dance tune that never failed to fill the floor with ladies (and quite a few gentlemen) So ladies, Today's “Great Song” is for you. Grab a couple of drinks and get out there on the floor!
