The title of today's Great Song of 1986 is Greek, and religious in nature.
In fact, "Kyrie Eliason" ("Lord have Mercy" in English) is used in the liturgy of several Christian denominations.
The lyrics to "Kyrie Eliason" by Mr. Mister were written by Jon Lang, and according group member Richard Page, who co-wrote the music with Steve George, the entire song is a prayer.
There is an urban legend attached to the song that you may have heard at some point.
Supposedly, Richard actually wrote the lyrics while in the hospital after being physically attacked. But the truth is: Jon indeed was the lyricist, and although he had once been hospitalized after an attack, it had been years earlier had nothing to do with the song.
"Kyrie Eliason" was a worldwide hit, charting in 14 countries, reaching #1 in Norway, Canada, and here in the US, where it topped Billboard's Hot 100 and the Mainstream Rock Chart.
In the years since, the song has been covered by several Christian rock groups, and has been used on TV in shows like "Miami Vice" and "The Goldbergs."
