Winifred Lovett, the bass singer of The Manhattans not only wrote the song, he recited the spoken word intro. As a club DJ at the time, I can tell you this was a sure-fire floor filler at the end of the night. Even though it's a serious breakup song, people really got into slow dancing to its "smooooth groove.
