Kevin Cronin of REO Speedwagon was never really known for his piano playing. In concert, he pretty much stuck with lead vocals and guitar work, but in the studio, he started using it on REO's 1978 album, "You Can Tune a Piano, But You Can't Tuna Fish."
Then in 1982, The band released their "Good Trouble" album, which featured their only SINGLE to feature Kevin on piano: "Keep the Fire Burnin'." (He also wrote it.)
And it turned out to be a Great Song!
Billboard Magazine called attention to its "urgent uptempo rhythms, surging organ, and vaulting vocals," and this was just before it hit the charts.
In the end, "Keep the Fire Burnin'" reached #2 on Billboard's Top Rock Tracks Chart, and #6 on the Hot 100. In Canada, it peaked at #10 on the Singles Chart.
REO Speedwagon didn't release any other singles from "Good Trouble," which seems a bit strange...but they certainly picked the RIGHT one to release: "Keep the Fire Burnin'" is a Great Song of 1983! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6W5sDgBOp98
Tomorrow: Bob goes western. Sort of.
