Today's Great Song of 1981 was originally written by producer, percussionist, and steelpan virtuoso, Ralph MacDonald, along with William Salter. (Steelpan drums are a traditional rhythm instrument from Trinidad and Tobago).
"Just the Two of Us" started out as an instrumental by saxophonist Grover Washington, Jr., but Ralph eventually thought it could use some lyrics.
Taking a cue from Bill Withers' Great Song of '72, "Use Me," he called Bill asked him to write something--and then sing it with Grover's instrumental.
The new version with Bill on vocals was a three chart hit in the US: #2 on Billboard's Hot 100 and Adult Contemporary Charts, and #3 on the R&B/Hip-Hop Chart. It went on to win the Grammy for Best Rhythm & Blues Song."
