Junior's Farm/Sally G. - Paul McCartney & Wings (1975) 1/26/21

Updated: Mar 21, 2021

Curly Putnam Jr. was a country music songwriter who was famous for writing songs like “He Stopped Loving Her Today” for George Jones, D-I-V-O-R-C-E for Tammy Wynette and “Green Green Grass of Home” for Porter Waggoner, Tom Jones and (and dozens of other artists).

In 1974, Paul & Linda McCartney (and Wings) visited Nashville with the idea of rehearsing before their next tour, and recording a few songs while they were in town. They were invited to stay at Curly's farm in nearby Lebanon, and they took advantage of the offer.

This, in turn, inspired Paul and Linda to write what they called, “a silly little song about getting out of the city, with no deep meaning to it.”

That “silly little song” was “Junior's Farm,” which turned out to be a “Great Song of the '70s!” (And now you know who “Junior” was!)

From day one, the song was designed to be a “stand-alone” single, and it didn't appear on an album until “Wings Greatest Hits” in 1978.

“Junior's Farm” was Paul's final release on Apple Records before moving to Capitol, and was a BIG success on the charts!

Released in 1974 and crossing over into 1975, it reached #3 on Billboard's Hot 100 and #10 on Canada's Top 40. It was also a Top 10 hit in New Zealand (#3), South Africa (#6), and Norway. (#9)

NOTE: The flip side of the single was a country song called “Sally G.” which also had some solid chart success, peaking at #7 on Billboard's Easy Listening Chart. In Canada, it reached #6 on the Adult Contemporary Chart and #11 on the Country Chart!

“Junior's Farm:” a “Great Song of the '70s!” (“Sally G.” was pretty good, too!) :-)
