Jeopardy - Greg Kihn Band (1984) 6/6/23

Plot: A man is about to marry. He gets an extreme case of cold feet, then falls asleep and dreams that his bride and all the guests turn into monsters. He decides to run out on the wedding, only to find out his bride has also run out - so they drive off together.

Sound like a horror film? Actually, its the music video for 1984's "Jeopardy" by the Greg Kihn Band.

With all the dreams-within-dreams and inverted meanings in the video, it makes the song itself seem a bit more weird and creepy than it actually is...and a lot more fun!

"Jeopardy" was a worldwide hit, charting in 14 countries, including Canada (#4) and the US (#2 on Billboard's Hot 100, and #1 on the Dance Chart!)

A song that odd was ripe for parody, so enter Weird Al Yankovic and "I Lost on Jeopardy."

Al's version was about losing on the classic game show, and the video was complete with cameos by original pre-Alex Trebek host Art Fleming and announcer Don Pardo...with Greg Kihn himself popping up at the end to spoof the ending of his OWN video.

C

lever and fun, "I Lost on Jeopardy" ended up charting at #84 on the Hot 100. (It also got a lot of "airplay" via personal cassette copies being made and played for friends.

"Jeopardy" by the Greg Kihn Band, and "I Lost on Jeopardy" by Weird Al Yankovic: a Great Song...and a Great Parody from 1984!

Tomorrow: Wham Wakes Up.
