Today's "Great Song of 1978" was a #1 hit for 5 straight weeks on Billboard's Adult Contemporary chart. Music reviewers at the time called it "sweetly catchy, "bittersweet," and a "timeless classic."
"It's Sad to Belong" by England Dan & John Ford Coley is all of those things, but Dale Van Atta of Salt Lake City's Deseret News was more specific: "It's the universal divorce anthem--about the monotony of monogamy."
It's all summed up in the chorus: "It's sad to belong to someone else when the right one comes along."
Kind of a bummer, but Dan Seals and John Ford Coley sang it so well, you could feel their sadness--but the fact they could make the listener feel it too made it a "Great Song."
