I've mentioned before that Richard Carpenter had a great ear for picking songs to record that he could arrange to fit Karen's voice. Today's "Great Song of 1972" is a perfect example.
While trying to find a song to cover for The Carpenters' fourth album, "A Song for You," he came across a cut from Carole King's 1971 album, "Music."
"It's Going to Take Some Time" was a breakup song about emotional recovery, and Richard's arrangement allowed Karen to give it an upbeat feel.
By contrast, Carole's original version was more sparse and introspective, so much so, that Carole said it made her version "sound like a demo!" (That seems like a backhanded compliment, but maybe it's just me.)
I've included a link to Carole's version so you can form your own opinion.
For the record, The Carpenters took their version to #2 on Billboard's Adult Contemporary Chart (#1 in Canada). It also made the Top 15 in the US (#12) and up North (#14).
