Today's "Great Song of 1975" is unique in several ways.
The structure of "Why Can't We be Friends" by War is quite a bit different than the norm. Each member of the band sings his own two line solo, followed by the title sung four times. Overall, the title is sung 44 times in just under 4 minutes.
You'd think that would be a recipe for "tedious," but in reality, it makes the song a lot of fun! And I'm not the only one who thinks so.
The folks at NASA, who over the decades have shown a quirky sense of humor--while simultaneously running a serious space program--actually beamed the song to the linking of Soviet cosmonauts and U.S. astronauts for the Apollo–Soyuz Test Project!
Back on Earth, the song reached #6 on both the US and Canadian Top 40, and #9 on Billboard's Rhythm & Blues Chart.
No word on whether it charted in The Soviet Union.
