This may surprise you, but the very first concert I ever attended was Bread in 1972 (at the old Toledo Sports Arena). To my surprise, especially considering their reputation for beautiful slow songs, they actually ROCKED THE HOUSE! That said, ballads were their "Bread" and butter. See what I did there? ;-)

Today's "Great Song of the '70s" was arguably their prettiest song--a song with lyrics that many people--including me--believe to be sheer poetry. The song went to #1 on the Adult Contemporary charts in both the U.S and Canada. From 1971:
