I Won't Last a Day Without You - Carpenters (1974) (8/32/22)

1974 was a busy year for The Carpenters. They were driving themselves far too hard--which eventually led to Karen's anorexia and Richard's Quaalude addition.

All that was in the future, but an early sign of things to come came when they realized they had absolutely NO time to relax...or record a new album or even a single.

With their record company (A&M) breathing down their necks, Richard took a look back at their 1973 album, "A Song for You," and found today's "Great Song" of the '70s."

"I Won't Last a Day Without You" was written by Paul Williams and Roger Nichols. The pair had already written "We've Only Just Begun" and "Rainy Days and Mondays' for the duo, both of which were huge hits.

Richard figured the odds of having another hit with a Williams/Nichols tune would be pretty good...so he had it released as a single.

And, of course, he was right!

"I Won't Last a Day Without You" topped Billboard's Adult Contemporary Chart, and reached #11 on the Hot 100. It also topped the AC chart in Canada, while peaking at #7 on their Top 40.
