There is something you should know about today's "Great Song of the '70s:" IT IS NOT A WEDDING SONG!
Far from it. What it is...is a heartfelt breakup song, and the only song ever to hit #1 on the Country Music Chart TWICE by the same artist: first in 1974, and again in 1982. The artist was Dolly Parton.
Of course, today's song also went to #1 on the Top 40 chart in 1992 by a totally different artist: Whitney Houston. While both versions of the song were huge hits, there were differences. Most people agree that while Whitney's version is undeniably powerful, Dolly's is undeniably "real." There's a reason for that, but instead of me trying to explain it, I'll let Dolly do it herself in today's video.
TRIVIA: Both Dolly's and Whitney's version hit #1 after being in a film. Dolly's second time was from "The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas." Whitney's was from "The Bodyguard."
TRIVIA 2: The only other artist to ever go to #1 twice with the same song was Chubby Checker on the Top 40 chart with "The Twist" in 1960 and 1962.
