I'm On Fire - Dwight Twilley Band (1975) 10/8/21

Dwight Twilley was a one-hit wonder twice--once with his namesake band and once as a solo artist with backing by a superstar. Here's how it happened:

In 1975, the Dwight Twilley Band released their debut single, "I'm On Fire," which reached number 16 on Billboard's Hot 100.

What made it a "Great Song of the '70s" was the fact that it sounded like a classic rock song from the get-go. In fact, It still sounds as classic today as it did back then.

Unfortunately, a long streak of bad luck followed.

If I went into specifics, this would be an extremely long and boring post. So let me boil it down to one run-on sentence:

The next 9 years were filled with record distribution problems, unreleased albums, singles that went nowhere due to zero record company promotion, a change in record companies with zero results, and the breakup of the band.

It wouldn't be until 1984 until Dwight, as a solo artist, had his second Great song: "Girls, "which certainly garnered attention because of the backing vocals by his friend Tom Petty.

Coincidentally, "Girls" also peaked at number 16 on the hot 100.

(TRIVIA): At one point after becoming a solo artist, Dwight's backing band included Susan Cowsill. Yes, THAT Susan Cowsill.)

But let's go back to when the future looked bright for The Dwight Twilley Band and their debut single, "I'm On Fire," became a "Great Song of the '70s!

"Girls" (Dwight & Tom Petty)--1984):
