Today, we're looking at a one-hit wonder that actually had about a half-dozen charted singles between 1973 and 1975...but their first release was by far their biggest hit, and a "Great Song of the '70s:" "I'm Doin' Fine Now."
The group, New York City, was aptly named, since all of its members were from the Big Apple, and each brought with them a musical pedigree that spanned the history of Soul and Doo-Wop music.
Group member John Brown alone had once been a part of The Moonglows, The Five Satins and The Cadillacs!
What's more, two members of New York City--Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards would go on to form the classic disco group, Chic!
There was a certain irony to "I'm Doin' Fine Now," since New York City gave us a an early--and perfect--example of the smooth PHILADELPHIA sound of soul! :-)
In 1973, the song was a triple chart hit: #8 on Billboard's Adult Contemporary Chart, #14 on the R & B Chart and #17 on the Hot 100. It also reached #20 in the UK.
