Starting in the late '70s, country artist Eddie Rabbitt started crossing over to pop and rock, and as 1980 turned into 1981, his biggest hit was all over the airwaves!
"i Love a Rainy Night" was based on a song he had started working on 12 years before--and then abandoned.
One day, he was rummaging through a box of old cassettes he found in his basement, and found a fragment of the song--basically, "I love a rainy night" sung over and over.
This gave him a fresh idea, and he called in his frequent collaborators Even Stevens and David Malloy to help him finish it.
And a "Great Song of the '80s was born!
When it was released as a single, the story of a man who loves thunderstorms because they 'wash his cares away, so he can wake up to a sunny day' quickly "stormed its way" to #1 on three Billboard Charts: Country, Adult Contemporary and Hot 100!
Note: The rhythm section of of finger snaps and hand claps was designed to sound like windshield wipers--thanks to percussionist Farrell Morris.
Although Eddie would have several more hits during his career,
"I Love a Rainy Night" was, by far," his "Greatest Hit' (from 1981)!
Tomorrow: Talking to Strangers.
