In the early '80s, Duran Duran released several songs that became solid hits in the UK, Europe and Australia, but they couldn't seem to crack the North American market.
Things started to change in 1982, when they released the song "Hungry Like the Wolf." It initially looked like business as usual: A Top 10 hit in all the usual places.
This time, however, things happened a little differently. The song was officially released in the US & Canada in December of 1982, and garnered some regional airplay, and then in 1983, MTV started playing the song,
Before long, "Hungry Like the Wolf" was #1 on Billboard's Rock Chart and #3 on the Hot 100. In It also went to #1 on Canada's Top 40!
In 2006, VH1 ranked "Hungry Like the Wolf" at # 3 on its list of the "100 Greatest Songs of the 80's," and it's currently #398 on Rolling Stone's "500 Greatest Songs of All Time."
Thank you, MTV!
Note: The song was created in an interesting way. On a single Saturday afternoon, each member of the group wrote their own separate parts as they arrived at the recording studio. They laid down their tracks one-by-one as they composed them, and by evening, the song was complete!
Note: #2: According to the group, the song was loosely based on the story of Little Red Riding Hood, and some of the song's riffs were taken note-for-note from Gordon Lightfoot's "If You Could Read My Mind." (I can't hear it, but maybe you can?)
"Hungry Like the Wolf" by Duran Duran--it was always a Great Song of the '80s...it just needed a little push from MTV! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oJL-lCzEXgI
