How Deep is Your Love (1977) 12/1/20

It's certainly no secret that the Bee Gees dominated the soundtrack to “Saturday Night Fever,” with several of the “Great Songs” they wrote for the film ultimately topping the charts in 1977-78.

But here are a few things you may NOT know:

The first song released from the soundtrack was “How Deep is Your Love.” Barry Gibb wrote the song for Yvonne Elliman, but producer Robert Stigwood insisted that the Bee Gees record it themselves.

The song was released as a single and hit the charts before the album..and the film...were released, but once the “Fever” was available in record stores and showing in theatres, the song shot to #1 on Billboard's Hot 100 (3 weeks) and the Adult Contemporary Chart (6 weeks)! It also hit #1 in Canada, Brazil, France and Finland...and was a Top 10 smash in 11 other countries!

The song won the Grammy for Best Pop Performance, and was nominated for Best Original Song at the Golden Globes.

In 2011, Billboard placed the song at #13 on their Top 100 Adult Contemporary Songs of All Time.

As for Yvonne Elliman, she did okay. The Bee Gees gave her “If I Can't Have You” to sing on the soundtrack, and she took it to #1 as well. (We'll highlight the song at a later date!)

“How Deep is Your Love:” a Great Song of the '70s!”
