Hopelessly Devoted To You (1978) 7/12/20

Periodically since we began back in October, we've highlighted “Great Songs” from the 1978 film, “Grease.” (And you can revisit them all by following the links at the bottom of this post and scrolling 'til you get there!)

December 17th: “You're the One That I Want”

March 18th: “Grease”

April 9th: “Summer Nights”

And today, we're highlighting “Hopelessly Devoted to You!”

The song itself was written specifically for the movie, basically to give Olivia Newton-John a viable solo that could be turned into a hit. Not only did it work, the song has replaced Sandy's original solo, “Since I Don't Have You” (the classic '50s oldie) in almost every stage production and tour ever since.

On the charts, it was #1 in 4 countries, including Canada, #2 in the UK and Australia (Olivia's home country), and in the US, it was #3 on Billboard's Hot 100, #7 on the Adult Contemporary chart, and #20 on the Country chart.

“Hopelessly Devoted to You:” a “Great Grease” song—from 1978.
