Honey Come Back - Glen Campbell (1970) 5/5/22

In 1970 alone, today's "Great Song" was recorded and released by 13 different artists!

Some were album cuts that never became singles... others were singles that never charted. But ONLY ONE artist was able to reach the Top 10 with it.

The artist was Glen Campbell, and the song was "Honey Come Back," a break-up song written by Hall-of-Fame songwriter Jimmy Webb.

Jimmy had already written some "Great ' 60s Songs," including "MacArthur Park" for Richard Harris, "Up, Up and Away" for the Fifth Dimension, and, of course, "By the Time I Get to Phoenix," "Galveston," and "Wichita Lineman" for Glen.

Competition to record the next "Jimmy Webb Hit" appeared to be fierce, but it also appeared that Glen's history with Jimmy gave him the inside edge.

The truth is, he had some heavy duty competition for "Honey Come Back." The other 12 artists included Johnny Mathis, Patti Page, Lynn Anderson, Bill Anderson, Ray Conniff, Jimmy Ruffin and Jr. Walker and the All Stars.

You can also tell by that list that it was recorded in different styles...from country to pop to soul.

But Glen? In addition to reaching #9 on the Euro Hit 50 (a chart that collected sales/airplay lists from NINE European Countries), it was a triple chart hit in the US and Canada.

In the US, it reached #2 on the Country Chart, #4 on the Adult Contemporary Chart and #19 on the Hot 100. In Canada, it did even better: #1 Country, #3 AC, and #6 Top 40.

"Honey Come Back," from the pen of Jimmy Webb and talent of Glen Campbell:" a Great Song of 1970!
