Take, for example, today's "Great Song: "Hold on to the Nights."
It's the story of a man who meets his soulmate...but he--and she--are each involved with someone else. He can't stop thinking about her...but the timing is all wrong.
The song is NOT autobiographical, but about a friend of Richard's who was living the nightmare, and it was tearing him apart emotionally.
Richard, however, poured enough emotion into the song to make people believe it was HE who was suffering...and it struck a chord with radio listeners and the record-buying public.
"Hold on to the Nights" went straight to #1 on Billboard's Hot 100, and #3 on the Adult Contemporary Chart.
It was Richard Marx's first #1 song...but certainly not his last...and a Great Song of 1988! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Rl8lzpQzaY
