In 1982, Fleetwood Mac released "Gypsy," their 13th studio album, which yielded one of their biggest US hits: "Hold Me."
The song was written by Christine McVie...long after her divorce from John McVie. In fact, you may be surprised to learn that it was based on her tumultuous 6-year relationship with Dennis Wilson of the Beach Boys!
"Hold Me" was co-written by Robbie Patton, who was Fleetwood Mac's opening act for a while in the late '70s and and early '80s, and it was sung as a duet of sorts with Lindsey Buckingham.
And here's here's an interesting, but not surprising, tidbit: when they shot the video, their infamous knack for bickering reared its ugly head--again.
Apparently John McVie was drunk and mostly useless, Stevie Nicks nearly refused to cooperate, and Christine was was furious with them both. Somehow, they still got the job done.
Chartwise, it was Fleetwood Mac's first Top 5 hit since the "Rumours" juggernaut of
singles in 1977: #3 on Billboard's Mainstream Rock Chart and #4 on the Hot 100 for 7 STRAIGHT WEEKS--a record at the time.
TRIVIA: They were kept from moving higher by "Eye of the Tiger" by Survivor, "Abracadabra" by Steve Miller, and "Hurt So Good" by John Mellencamp--all of which are Great Songs we will highlight in the future.
"Hold Me" by Fleetwood Mac--another Great Song penned by Christine McVie, and a Great Song of 1982 overall! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E0sha1XfHxw
