Today we have a "Great Song" that took a while to become a worldwide hit.
In late 1969, the British Group Vanity Fare released a song about a young man who is attempting to hitch-hike because
he has no money. The title, of course, is "Hitchin' a Ride."
The song peaked at #16 on the British Charts in February of 1979, and then slowly made its way around the globe, reaching #2 in South Africa, and finally ending up in North America, where four months later (in June) reached #3 in Canada and #5 in the US.
Considering the singer of the song is flat broke, it's a cheery little tune, most notable for the use of electric recorders in the instrumentation--justifying the use of recorders as a teaching tool by elementary school music teachers everywhere! :-)
All-in-all, "Hitchin' a Ride" by Vanity Fare is a "Great lighthearted Song of 1970," that helped kick off a great decade of music! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MUjmSYutW5M
