Here You Come Again (1977) 3/7/20

There's really no doubt about it: Dolly Parton was the "Queen of Crossovers" in the 1970s.

We've already saluted "I Will Always Love You" and "Jolene" as "Great Songs"...and today we're adding one more: "Here You Come Again."

This was one of the very few hits by Dolly that she didn't write herself: the prolific husband and wife songwriting team of of Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil ("You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling," "I Just can't Believing," and dozens of others) had the honors. They originally pitched it to Brenda Lee—who turned it down.

B.J.Thomas recorded it, but it wasn't released as a single.

Dolly was up next, and after she added her special touches to it (including a steel guitar), up the charts it went. MULTIPLE charts!

Billboard (US): #1 on the Country Chart, #2 on the Easy Listening Chart, and #3 on the Hot 100.

Canada: #1 on the Country and Adult Contemporary Charts, and #7 on the Top Singles Chart.

And Dolly won the Grammy for "Best Female Country Performance!"

(Note: Mann & Weil will be showing up as songwriters a few more times in the near future.)

Here's Dolly with a "Great Song of "1977!"
