Today's "Great Song of 1971" is a "Rainy Day" song.
Of course, most songs with "Rainy" in the title are sad and melancholy. Examples include: "Rainy Days & Mondays" by the Carpenters and "Rainy Night in Georgia" by Brook Benton.
But...there's more than one way to sing a sad song about a rainy day, and The Fortunes came up with a novel idea: make the music upbeat and cheerful, while singing about a man going through a sad breakup.
It worked: "Here Comes That Rainy Day Feeling Again" made it all the way to #8 on Billboard's Adult Contemporary chart, and #15 on the Hot 100.
