Helen Reddy passed away yesterday at the age of 78. I think Variety Magazine's comprehensive obituary sums up her life and career beautifully, and I highly recommend you read it: https://variety.com/2020/music/news/helen-reddy-dead-i-am-woman-singer-1234787284/
I would be completely remiss if I didn't honor her legacy by highlighting a few of her biggest hits—especially since almost ALL of them came during the '70s.
Among her “Great Songs of the '70s, were 9 #1's on either the Hot 100, the Adult Contemporary Chart, or both.
These included (in reverse order) 1974's “Angie Baby,” which topped both charts.
And the song that defined her career and legacy (and still packs a powerful message in today's world): 1971's “I Am Woman," which went to #2 on the Hot 100 and #1 on the AC Chart.
I'd also like to include a beautiful song that only made it to #27 in 1977: “Candle on the Water,” from the original Disney Film “Pete's Dragon,” in which she starred with an all-star cast that included Jim Dale, Mickey Rooney, Jim Backus, Red Buttons and Shelley Winters.
Rest in Peace, Helen, May your musical legacy be a candle on the water to us all.
