Lyin' Eyes (1975) 9/11/20

Updated: Sep 11, 2020

Glenn Frey and Don Henley of the Eagles were hanging out at their favorite bar one night, when Glenn noticed a beautiful young woman who appeared to be cheating on her husband. She was partying with an much older, very unattractive man who looked to be very rich. Glenn pointed her out to Don and said, “Look at her. She can't even hide those 'Lyin' Eyes.”

Well, you can guess what happened next. A short two days later, Glenn and Don had written a “Great Song of the '70s, “and when the Eagles' next album (“One of These Nights”) came out in 1975, “Lyin' Eyes” (with Glenn on lead vocals) was released as the second single (following the title track).

It was a HUGE hit in both the US and Canada! Here's how it broke down on the charts.

Hot 100/Top 40 Chart: #2 in the US, #19 in Canada.

Adult Contemporary Chart: #3 in the US, #4 in Canada.

Country Chart (a rarity for a rock band back in those days): #8 in the US, #20 in Canada.

It won the Grammy Award for “Best Pop Performance by a Group,” and was featured prominently in the 1980 film “Urban Cowboy,” starring John Travolta and Debra Winger.

“Lyin' Eyes:” A “Great Song of the '70s!”
