For Loretta Lynn's little sister, Crystal Gayle, the '70s were a very busy and productive decade. She charted 19 times on the Country Chart, with 12 Top 10s and 6 #1 singles...a successful streak that continued well into the '80s!
Several of those "Great Songs" also crossed over to the Adult Contemporary Chart, and a few found their way onto the Hot 100.
The biggest example, was 1977's "Don't It make My Brown Eyes Blue," which we highlighted back on 7/11/20. It reached #1 on the Country Chart, #2 on the Hot 100 and #4 on the AC Chart. Check it out here:
Another prime example was her last "Great Song of the 70s:" 1979's "Half the Way"
Crystal had just changed record labels from United Artists to Columbia, and many times, that signals a change of direction or style.
But not for Crystal! It was no changes and full speed ahead!"
"Half the Way" was the very first song she recorded for Columbia (for the album "Miss the Mississippi"), and in short order, the song put her back in the Top 10: #2 on the Country Chart and #9 on the AC Chart. It also reached #15 on the Hot 100.
The song is about a woman who wants a man to love her with all his heart and soul, and not just "half the way."
In it's own pleasant way, It's a "Great Song of 1979," and just the sort of song you'd expect from the very pleasant Crystal Gayle:
