Grassroots Tribute 2/11/21

During the last few years of the '60s, The Grassroots were regulars on Billboard's Hot 100, with hits like “Let's Live For Today,” (#8 in 1967), and their biggest hit, “Midnight Confessions,” (#5 in 1968).

Note: Creed Bratton of TV's “The Office” was guitarist for the group when those songs were hits, but he left shortly thereafter.

Unfortunately, The Grassroots had faded away by the mid-'70s, and the last time they were able to crack the Top 15, was in 1971, when they did it THREE TIMES.

Today, I'm highlighting all three songs, as a salute to their overall body of work.

Let's break 'em down:

In January of '71, they released “Temptation Eyes,” which peaked at #15, but stayed on the charts for 14 weeks!

In May, they followed it up with “Sooner or Later,” their last Top 10 hit in the US, peaking at #9.

Finally, in October, they released “Two Divided By Love,” which just missed the Top 15 in the US at #16...BUT went all the way to #2 in Canada!

Like most of their hits, all three were uptempo pop songs, with just a little bit of psychedelic rock thrown in. They were also EXTREMELY catchy.

And that's why I'm calling this my “Grassroots Campaign” to include these songs on the list of “Great Songs of 1971!” :-)

“Temptation Eyes:”

“Sooner of Later:”

“Two Divided By Love:”
