Sometimes, the FOURTH time is the charm...and that certainly was the case for today's "Great Song of 1972:" "Goodtime Charlie's Got the Blues" by Danny O'Keefe.
#1: Danny originally recorded the song in 1967, but it was never released.
#2: In 1968 it was recorded by a group called The Bards, but nothing came of it (or the group for that matter).
#3: In 1971, Danny re-recorded it for his self-titled debut album. Nothing happened.
#4: Finally, in 1972, he re-arranged and re-recorded the song for his second album, 'O'Keefe," and THIS time, it became a Top 10 hit on two Billboard charts, reaching #5 on the Adult Contemporary Chart and #9 on the Hot 100.
Danny became--and remains--a one-hit wonder--but it's a "Great Song," so hopefully any remaining "Blues" belong to Charlie alone. :-)
