As Paul Simon was compiling songs for his 1975 album, “Still Crazy After All These Years,” he wondered if it would be TOO crazy if he included an “Old-Fashioned-Revival-Meeting-Come-to-Jesus” Style Gospel tune.
Well, he figured if he was going to do it, he was going to do it right...so he enlisted the talents of Phoebe Snow and the Jesse Dixon Singers...and went for it.
The result, “Gone at Last,” was jaw dropping—especially when Phoebe cut loose on her part! There was nothing else like it on secular radio at the time, and some radio station music directors thought Paul truly WAS crazy for releasing it—but played it anyway!
The song was Top 10 hit on the Adult Contemporary Chart: #7 in Canada and #9 in the US. It also did rather well on the Top 40: #29 in Canada and #23 in the US.
Paul Simon may have been crazy...but I've always felt “Gone at Last” was a “Great Song of the '70s!” (Especially when Phoebe takes over!)
