George Harrison ( The "Silent Beatle") was a busy man after the Fab 4 broke up.
In addition to releasing his TRIPLE album, "All Things Must Pass" and the single "My Sweet Lord," (which we highlighted back on 10/9/20), he was kept extra busy working on projects with Ringo, Badfinger, and others, while coordinating--then working through the legalities and problems that arose during and after--his Concert for Bangladesh, not to mention the "My Sweet Lord" lawsuit. Even though George was mentally and physically exhausted, he still found time to record and release a follow-up album, "Living in the Material World," and the single, "Give Me Love (Give Me Peace on Earth)."
At the time, George was embracing Hindu spirituality and "Give Me Love" was sort of a mixture of Hindu and Christian philosophy--signaling that he was trying to look past his problems to a brighter future.
Music critics and fans fell in love with the song, and made it a Top 10 hit in 9 countries--including #1 in the US and #2 in Canada.
Now some very cool trivia: The song George replaced at #1 on Billboard's Hot 100 was "My Love" by Paul McCartney & Wings. Then, the song that replaced George at #1 was "Will It Go Round in Circles" by Billy Preston, who was The Beatles go-to keyboard player during their final years. (In fact, the song "Get Back" was credited to The Beatles with Billy Preston). For the week ending June 30th, 1973, George, Paul and Billy were ranked at 1, 2 and 3 (respectively) on Billboard's Hot 100!
Technically, this marked the first time since April of 1964 that Beatles occupied the top 3 positions on the charts! And even if you DON'T count Billy, TWO Beatles at the top hasn't been repeated in 48 years!
"Give Me Love (Give Me Peace on Earth):" A "Great Song of 1973" and more proof that the "Silent Beatle" had a lot of important things to say!
