Every time an artist from the '70s or '80s passes away, it's a stark reminder of our own mortality. While their music will live on, there will come a time when those of us who enjoyed their songs first hand--whether we sang along with them on the radio , played them on our stereos, or saw them in concert.--will no longer be here to share our memories about them.
The death of Jimmy Buffett brought that into focus for millions of his fans, and now, we must refocus yet again, with the death of Gary Wright, who passed away Monday at the age of 80--a victim of Parkinson's disease and Lewy body dementia.
Here the official obituary from NBC: https://www.nbcnews.com/.../gary-wright-singer-1970s-hit...
This hits me harder than most because just a few weeks ago, I lost one of my best friends and former roommates, Paul Ritchie, to the exact same combination.
Knowing what it did to Paul, makes me feel deeply for Gary Wright's family.
But enough about that...
Gary's two biggest hits were 1972's "Dream Weaver" and 1976's "Love is Alive," both of which we've highlighted in the past, and have linked up below.
One song I hadn't covered up to now was his 1981 hit, "Really Wanna Know You," a somewhat forgotten "Great Song" from his album "The Right Place."
The song spent 17 weeks on Billboard's Hot 100, peaking at #16 on the Hot 100 and #17 on the Mainstream Rock Chart. In Canada, it peaked at #14.
"really Wanna Know You" was Gary's last chart hit and I think it deserves some renewed recognition for the Great Song it is--giving us, perhaps, another memory to enjoy while we still can. R.I.P. Gary Wright. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=47wxk0NoNzI
