If at first you don't succeed, fire your managers and production team, and start over.
That's what The Sweet did in 1974. Up to that point, all of their songs had been written by their producers, Mike Chapman and Nicky Chinn, but "Fox on the Run" was different. It was the first song the band had written for themselves...and after it was released from the European version of their album, "Destination Boulevard" to universal...apathy... Mike and Nicky were shown the door.
The Sweet then re-recorded the song THEIR way for release from the American version of the album...and "Fox on the Run" became a "Great Song of 1975!
The song--about a "well-used" groupie they wanted nothing to do with--became a worldwide hit, reaching the Top 10 in 15 countries. It topped the charts in Australia, South Africa and West Germany, reached #2 in Canada, the UK, Ireland, The Netherlands, and Norway, and ended up at #5 on Billboard's Hot 100!
Then, in 2016, thanks to its use in the trailer for "Guardian's of the Galaxy, Volume 2," it came back and topped the I-Tunes Rock Chart!
Note: In 1969, Manfred Mann had released an entirely different song called "Fox on the Run" that reached #5 in the UK. Tony Hazzard, who wrote the song, was not pleased. By law, however, you cannot copyright a title, so unfortunately. he was out of luck.
"Fox on the Run" by The Sweet:" a Great "Second Chance" Song of the '70s!
