Forever Your Girl - Paula Abdul (1989) 8/7/23

Most of us remember Paula Abdul as a judge on "American Idol."

Before that, of course, we most likely remember she had some hit records, but before THAT, she was a choreographer--and a good one, too!

She started with the Laker Girls, and quickly gained notoriety and a higher profile by working with George Michael, ZZ Top, Duran Duran, and Janet Jackson.

That led to her singing career...and here are some facts that may surprise you:

#1: Her 1988 album, "Forever Your Girl," was considered to be the most successful debut album of ALL TIME up to that point, and was the first time ANY artist had scored 4 consecutive #1 singles on Billboard's Hot 100 with their debut album!

#2: As of 2023, "Forever Your Girl" (the album) has sold over 7 MILLION copies!

Now, let's circle back to those #1 singles: Paula's first single, "Knocked Out" reached #8 on the Hip-Hop Chart, but the next 4 in a row set the record: "The Way That You Love Me," "Straight Up," "Forever Your Girl," and "Cold Hearted."

Each of them is a Great Song of the '80s, and I will cover them all in the coming months, but today I'm looking at the title cut.

"Forever Your Girl." is about loyalty in a relationship, and in addition to the top spot on the Hot 100 in 1989, it reached #8 on the Dance Chart and #11 on the Adult Contemporary Chart. In Canada, it topped the Top 40 and reached #2 on the Dance Chart.

Note: The video features a young Elijah Wood (and some cool tap dancing by Paula at the end)..
