Fooled Around and Fell in Love (1976) 2/26/21 Elvin Bishop

Elvin Bishop wrote and performed today's "Great Song of the '70s," but he didn't sing it!

Elvin felt his gravelly voice was not a good fit for "Fooled Around and Fell in Love," so he asked one of his background singers, Mickey Thomas, to sing it instead. That was probably a good choice...for both Elvin AND Mickey.

In 1976, the single went to #3 in the US and New Zealand, and #8 in Canada.

Elvin scored a hit record, and Mickey, based on his performance, scored an impressive new gig...as the next lead singer of Jefferson Starship!

In the ensuing years, "Fooled Around" was featured in a number of movies, including "Boogie Nights" and "Guardians of the Galaxy."

In 2019, Country superstar Miranda Lambert covered the song with help from her Roadside Bars & Pink Guitars Tour support acts Maren Morris, Ashley McBryde, Tenille Townes, Elle King and Caylee Hammack. It won the Academy of Country Music Award for Vocal Event of the Year and was nominated for the Country Music Association Award for Musical Event of the Year!

No foolin'! "Fooled Around and Fell in Love" was a "Great Song of 76" (and 2019!)
