Question: Is it possible for a song that never charted to be one of the Great Songs of the '70s? I believe so. Exhibit A: In 1970, RCA records released a single from an up-and-coming singer/songwriter's debut album...and it garnered almost no attention whatsoever--until he later became one of the biggest stars of the '70s. By that time, the charts had passed this song by. But then, young couples everywhere starting making it their wedding song--and today, I think it sounds and "feels" as beautiful as it was nearly 50 years ago. (Wow, I'm old).
