The old saying "The more things change, the more they stay the same," could certainly apply to today's Great Song of 1982: "Eye in the Sky" from the album of the same name by The Alan Parsons Project.
On the album, the song is prefaced with a nearly 2-minute instrumental piece called "Sirius," which many album rock stations played in its entirety from the get-go.
Most Top 40 stations, however, opted to play the shorter single release that didn't include "Sirius." This was because, even in the '80s, the length of a song could be a deciding factor on how much airplay a song could and would receive.
In any event, the single edit was the hit...reaching #1 in Canada and Spain, while clocking in at #3 on Billboard's Hot 100 and Adult Contemporary Charts.
Today, Classic Rock stations still play the long version, while Oldies stations still play the edit--with very few exceptions.
Like I said, the more things change, the more they stay the same, and that also applies to the fact that "Eye in the Sky/Sirius" is still a Great Song of 1982! Check out both versions below:
