The decade started off quite well for the group, Santana. On January 1st, 1970, they released a single from their self-titled 1969 debut album that was destined to become a "Great Song of the '70s!
"Evil Ways" was originally recorded in 1967 by jazz percussionist Willie Bobo, but unless you were a heavy duty jazz fan, it was pretty obscure.
Santana's version, however, became the group's first Top 10 hit, thanks to some fine vocals and an organ solo by Greg Rolie and expert guitar work by Carlos Santana himself.
In addition to reaching #9 on Billboard's Hot 100, it also reached #19 on the Adult Contemporary Chart.
The album version is almost a minute longer than the single, and in my opinion, it's a much better cut. I've linked both versions below so you can decide for yourself.
