When you've made your name as a singer of novelty songs, it can be hard to be taken seriously.
Unless you're Ray Stevens.
By 1970, Ray was well known for songs like "Ahab the Arab" and "Gitarzan." ("The Streak" came later.)
But then he fooled EVERYONE with a serious song that not only became a Pop Standard...but a popular song at religious gatherings!
"Everything is Beautiful" starts with a children's choir (including Ray's two daughters) singing the hymn: "Jesus Loves the Little Children," then jumps into an upbeat melody featuring anti-racist and pro-tolerance lyrics.
It struck a chord in America...and around the world. In addition to topping Billboard's Hot 100 and Adult Contemporary charts, it went to #1 in Canada and Australia. It was also a Top 20 hit in 5 other countries.
The accolades were many. It was nominated for SIX Grammy Awards...including "Song of the Year" and "Record of the Year!" Ray won for "Best Contemporary Male Vocalist, and a version by Gospel legend Jake Hess won "Best Inspirational Performance."
Since 1970, the song has been covered by dozens of artists, including Johnny Cash, Kris Kristofferson, Rascal Flats, Neil Sedaka, Bing Crosby...and even Jim Nabors!
"Everything is Beautiful:" A Great--and Beautiful--Song of the '70s!
