Billboard's #1 song for the year 1983 is one of the most misinterpreted songs of all time.
"Every Breath You Take" by the Police is NOT a love song, and DEFINITELY NOT a wedding song.
Sting wrote it after separating from his first wife, Frances Tomilty, and here's what he had to say about it: "I think it's a nasty little song, really rather evil. It's about jealousy and surveillance and ownership."
Listen closely and you'll hear what he means.
That said, it was a monster worldwide hit--misinterpreted or not!
When it was released as a single from the classic Police album "Synchronicity," it charted in 21 countries, making the Top 10 in 19 of them, including #1 in the US, Canada, The UK, Ireland, Israel, and South Africa!
In the US alone, it spent 8 weeks at #1 on the Hot 100. Overall, it sold more than 4 million copies.
"Every Breath You Take" was nominated for three Grammys, and won for "Song of the Year" and "Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals." (The other nomination was for "Record of the Year.")
Finally, it currently sits at #305 on Rolling Stone Magazine's list of the Top 500 Songs of All Time."
And it's STILL not a love song.
"Every Breath You Take" by the Police: a Great Song of 1983, not matter how you interpret it!
