In 1977, “Star Wars” was, by far, the #1 film at the box office, grossing over $221 MILLION. Of course, the theme song is one of the most iconic of all time.
But TODAY, were going to highlight the theme song from the SECOND highest grossing film of '77.
Coming in at more than $126 Million...it was “Smokey & The Bandit:” the ultimate car (and truck) chase movie, featuring CB radios, countless stunts, slapstick comedy and a fantastic cast headed by Burt Reynolds, Sally Field, Jackie Gleason and Jerry Reed!
Jerry, of course, was the singer/songwriter/guitar picker/actor responsible (with co-writer Dick Feller) for “Eastbound & Down,” the country/bluegrass jam that added an extra truckload of fun to the film, on its way to #3 on Billboard's Country chart.
Jerry could pick a guitar better than almost everyone (Even Elvis was a fan, but that's a story for a later date). Give “Eastbound & Down a listen and see if you don't agree. Then go watch the movie again. It may have come in second to “Star Wars,” but I guarantee it's funnier! :-)
Trivia: In CB lingo, “Eastbound and down” means :“I'm heading east, and I'm done broadcasting, but I'll still be listening to the channel.”
